The tide is the engine of this corner: almost three and a half metres on springs uncover mudflats and weedy stone, then fill them again in a few hours. On the flood, clearer salt water arrives from the mouth and the bottom improves a lot; on the ebb everything clouds over and an outgoing current appears.

Tucked inside the ría of Muros e Noia, this corner is sheltered from the 280° west that hammers the mouth: what reaches here is short chop, not groundswell. What does spoil it is a long southwesterly, which blows down the axis of the ría and raises dirty chop in no time.

This is ría water: two to four metres is normal and five on a dry summer day with the tide coming in. Everything that comes down the Tambre and the streams after rain ends up here, and then visibility drops to half a metre. It is the fallback for when there is sea outside, not the pretty spot.
opasnost
People work here: there are mussel rafts, shellfish beds and guild boats, and you must keep 300 metres from any working vessel and not disturb the beds. Annex VI of the 2009 Order closes inner ría lines that we do not have drawn: check the Muros e Noia one before you go out. At night, prohibited.
pristup
Park on the Muros promenade and get in from any of the ramps or small beaches along the inner edge; there is almost no walking. The bottom shelves slowly, so you have to swim a fair while to find stone; come out at the same ramp and watch the slippery weed at low water.

With three and a half metres of range on springs, the water moves fast over the Punta Insua slabs and the break shifts position with every hour of tide. The prudent plan is to get in shortly after low water, when the surge is smallest, and to be out before the flood covers the entry ledge.

The Carnota rocky ground between Lira and Punta Insua faces the open Atlantic: the 215°–300° sector comes right in and the 280° west makes it unworkable for days. Only with a continental easterly, and groundswell under a metre, can the coast be worked along sensibly.

Rich ground and clean water when the sea allows: eight or nine metres over the rock on a good day. Summer upwelling chills it and turns it green during nordés spells, and any leftover west groundswell keeps the rock wrapped in bubbles with sand held in suspension.
opasnost
The Os Miñarzos marine reserve covers waters off Lira and Carnota and its boundary is not drawn on our map: ask at the Lira fishermen's guild or the Xunta whether this point falls inside before you enter, because inside a reserve you do not spearfish without specific authorisation. Add a very exposed coast and the night ban.
pristup
You get there via Lariño and Portocubelo, park near the harbour and walk the track out to the rocky ground; the last stretch is loose stone. Get in at a low ledge with sea under a metre and decide your exit point beforehand, because here the spot you entered by may be breaking when you come back.
Carnota rocky ground; rich grounds, very exposed, only enter in calm seas.
Three and a half metres of spring tide move a lot of water through the mouth and the current squeezes right as you round Queixal, especially when it runs against the wind. At low water heads appear that are covered at high water and break without warning; slack is the quiet moment to round the point.

Punta Queixal is the granite foot of Monte Louro, on the southern lip of the ría mouth, facing west-southwest (245°). The 215°–300° sector reaches it with nothing in the way and 280° is the heading that shuts it down completely; in a nordés, though, the mount casts a lee and the north face of the cape works.

Over the western drop-offs the water is oceanic and on a good day you get eight or ten metres. The trap here is upwelling: with a nordés holding for several days, cold green water rises from below, the temperature drops sharply and visibility shrinks even though the surface is like a plate.
opasnost
This is an open cape: the surge against the granite does not forgive and there is no easy exit for several hundred metres of coast. With the mouth current, one lapse and you are carried into the ría. A float is compulsory and must stay within 25 metres, never a loaded gun out of the water, and night is banned nationwide.
pristup
Leave the car in the beach car park at the foot of the mount and walk across to the west side on the path that skirts the lagoon; it is a few minutes with gear on. Climb down to the rock at the lowest ledge you can find, and only if the sea is clearly under a metre.
Granite cape to the SW; drop-offs to the west with grouper and sea bream, very exposed to NW swell.
At spring low water, with more than three metres of range, the strand grows enormously and rocks appear to the south that let you get in without getting wet past the waist. At high water those rocks break and the entry gets awkward; on top of that the ebb pulls north along the whole beach.

This strand looks west-southwest with Monte Louro closing it off to the south, and that granite block takes some of the 280° edge off, leaving the southern end much calmer than the northern one. With an offshore easterly the beach flattens and the southern rocks come into their own.

The sand at San Francisco lifts with almost nothing, so the honest numbers are three to five metres beside the rocks and rather less in the middle of the strand. After two or three days without sea and an easterly it climbs to six; with west groundswell you cannot see the tip of your fin.
opasnost
This is a surf beach with obvious rip currents: never get in through the middle of the strand when there is sea running, use the southern corner. In summer there are swimmers and you must keep well away from them with the float clearly visible. Night is banned, and pollack (Pollachius pollachius) cannot be kept from 1 January to 30 April.
pristup
Parking beside the lagoon behind the dune, then a few minutes of sand to the southern end; you get in over the rocks at the foot of the mount with the tide half falling. The exit is the sand itself: if the south end is breaking, swim in with the wave and do not try to climb the granite.

✓The licence needs a medical fitness certificate for free-diving and civil-liability insurance (or a federative licence, which includes it). Mandatory in the Basque Country/Murcia/Asturias/Galicia; the federative licence covers it in Galicia/Balearics/Cantabria; the Canaries and Andalusia do NOT require it for the individual licence (a responsible health declaration). Minimum age generally 16 (14 in Andalusia).
Sigurnosni protokol
Setovi: prati nizove valova ≥15 min prije ulaska; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, zapljuskivanje može ići 50 m dalje od linije pjene. Zatišje >10 min uz period >12 s = veliki set koji «kasni», NE ulazi; uđi odmah nakon što prođe cijeli set i provjeri ponovno u 30. minuti.
Izlaz PRVO: nađi izlaz I rezervni prije ulaska. Na kamenitoj obali ili obali s gromadama porast mrtvog mora od 0,5 m može onemogućiti izlazak — ostati zaglavljen/bez izlaza glavni je ubojica.
Struja na rtu: na izbočenim rtovima često postoji stalna topografska povratna struja, bez obzira na model — lociraj je, ulazi/izlazi s privjetrine, nikad ne plivaj protiv nje.
Hladnoća: neopren prema prikazanoj SST; prvi drhtaj = skok metabolizma i pad apneje → izađi na prvi ustrajni drhtaj. Ispod 15 °C ograniči izlazak na 45–60 min.

Yes — in Muros you need a recreational sea-fishing licence (issued by the autonomous community); breath-hold only (no scuba), with a marker buoy and no night diving. See the guide.
✓There is no fixed national catch cap (, art. 5 delegates it to the communities); the standard is 5 kg/person/day, with 1 specimen allowed not to count (Canaries — Decreto 182/2004, art. 38.3; Murcia; Galicia; Basque Country). Protected species have per-piece quotas.
✓Only a harpoon is allowed — hand-held or mechanically propelled, with one or several points (, art. 14.1). Carrying spearfishing gear and underwater breathing equipment aboard AT THE SAME TIME is prohibited (art. 14.2) — an offence in itself, even if you dived on a breath hold.
✓Spain is not one jurisdiction. The licence is issued by a coastal autonomous community, and you must comply with the rules of the administration on whose littoral you are in the water: «debiendo cumplir la normativa establecida por la administración en cuyo litoral se realice la actividad» (, art. 13). Interior waters — inside the straight baselines: bays, coves, rías, the whole coastal strip — are the community's competence; exterior waters are the State's. So the age, the days of the week, the distances and the are found in your community's act, not in the state one.
✓Galicia: «Clase C» licence (submarina), procedure PE405A on the Xunta portal; minimum age 16, medical certificate required. Galicia recognises spearfishing licences from other communities and the EU. sede.xunta.gal (PE405A).
✓No-take zone: Atlantic Islands National Park (Cíes, Ons, Sálvora, Cortegada) — spearfishing banned (see zones on the map).
✓Galicia is the only community that closes weekdays: spearfishing is allowed only on Saturdays, Sundays and state or regional holidays, and from Maundy Thursday to Easter Sunday and from 1 May to 30 September, every day (Orden 17.09.2009, art. 13.2). Daylight only, orto to ocaso (art. 13.3). The cap is 5 kg per licence per day, and 2 octopus per fisher per day (art. 12.3). The zones closed to spearfishing are listed in (art. 11.2). The licence needs an official medical fitness certificate, insurance and an arms licence or a federation card (art. 3.b).
