- Get in very early, before the ferries, tour boats and pleasure craft that use the harbour mouth all day start moving. June and September beat August, when the port is heaving. And at night it is simply forbidden: Spanish law closes the water from sunset to sunrise.

- There is no tide worth the name here either, just centimetres. What does matter is that Maó harbour is a long narrow inlet, exactly the shape that amplifies a rissaga, and during those episodes the level swings and a jet of water runs in or out of the mouth, felt clearly along the wall.

- The cove is a narrow slot on the southern side of the Maó harbour mouth: its walls cut the northerly tramuntana and southerly winds alike, so it stays usable when the open coast is a mess. It goes off when the sea comes from the E-NE and pushes right in towards Fort Marlborough.

- Being right by the port, the water inside the inlet carries more particles and less visibility than outside; once you work out towards the La Mola cliffs it improves noticeably. After a few days of easterly the mouth is churned and there is little point; a long summer calm gives decent viz.
