There is no tide worth the name here either, just centimetres. What does matter is that Maó harbour is a long narrow inlet, exactly the shape that amplifies a rissaga, and during those episodes the level swings and a jet of water runs in or out of the mouth, felt clearly along the wall.

The cove is a narrow slot on the southern side of the Maó harbour mouth: its walls cut the northerly tramuntana and southerly winds alike, so it stays usable when the open coast is a mess. It goes off when the sea comes from the E-NE and pushes right in towards Fort Marlborough.

Being right by the port, the water inside the inlet carries more particles and less visibility than outside; once you work out towards the La Mola cliffs it improves noticeably. After a few days of easterly the mouth is churned and there is little point; a long summer calm gives decent viz.
opasnost
Harbour waters are closed to spearfishing and you must keep 300 m from working professional boats (RD 347/2011 art. 12.b); ferries and cruise ships use the mouth, so keep a highly visible buoy and never cross the channel. The Illa de l'Aire reserve lies about 4.7 km to the south.
pristup
Park in the hamlet of Cala Sant Esteve, among the houses lining the slot, and drop down the stone ramps near the fort; the water is a step away. From inside you swim seaward hugging the southern wall. With an easterly pushing in, do not exit through the mouth of the cove.

Tide is a matter of centimetres, as everywhere in the Balearics, so it organises nothing; what you do feel is the flow through the grau, the channel joining s'Albufera to the sea, with current and colder or fresher water after rain. And in a rissaga episode the level can swing abruptly.

Es Grau faces north and that is the catch: with a N-NE tramuntana the bay fills with sea and the surface chops up fast; Illa d'en Colom breaks some of it, but it does not save the day. With S and SW winds the land protects and the water lies flat along the rocks at the northern end.

The water comes good after several days of southerlies or flat calm, and over the northern rock you can see a long way. What ruins it is the outflow from s'Albufera after rain: brown water leaves through the grau and stains the bay for days. With the tramuntana up, do not even bother.
opasnost
This is the north coast of Menorca and a marine reserve runs along it where spearfishing is banned (Decret 41/2015 art. 6.1): check exactly where the boundary falls before you get in, because the line is invisible from the water. On top of that this is the s'Albufera des Grau Nature Park, with its own rules.
pristup
Park in the village of Es Grau and walk to the northern end of the beach where the rocks start; from there entry is easy and you swim out along the headland. Sand first, then boulders and low rock. With the tramuntana in, the beach is the only sensible exit, because the headland breaks.
Rocky ground to the north toward s'Albufera; exposed to the N; respect the Nature Park.
The tide here amounts to centimetres and changes nothing; what you actually feel is the current through the islet channel, which hardens under a steady wind. During a rissaga episode the Menorcan level can rise or fall by about a metre in minutes, and in the pass that turns into a real pull of water.

The channel between Punta Prima and l'Aire islet is wide open to the E and SE, worst around 90 degrees; only a land tramuntana leaves the pass flat. Whatever the wind does, this is reserve water: you come here to freedive and look, and the speargun stays out of it.

After a few flat days with a calm easterly the channel is strikingly clear over rock and Posidonia, one of the nicest snorkel swims in the south-east of the island. When an easterly sea gets up the pass turns milky and the current shows. Remember: looking is fine, shooting is not, this is a marine reserve.
opasnost
This point lies INSIDE the Illa de l'Aire marine reserve and spearfishing is banned throughout it (Decret 41/2015 art. 6.1); Menorca has no exemption at all. Add strong current in the channel, summer boat traffic and a protected islet whose landing is regulated.
pristup
Park at Punta Prima and get in off the sand or the rocks at the southern end of the beach; the swim towards the islet lighthouse is long and the current makes the return hard. Bring fins, buoy and mask, and leave the gun in the car: this water is closed to spearfishing.

There is barely any tide: Balearic springs are measured in centimetres, a quarter of a metre at most, so there is no tidal window to wait for. What moves the water is wind set-up and above all the rissaga, the Menorcan seiche that can shift the level inside a narrow inlet like Rafalet within minutes.

Sheltered from the N and NW tramuntana, which drops off the land and leaves the water flat by the S'Algar ladders. It is wide open between 50 and 170 degrees, worst on the 90 degree llevant, and a SE xaloc pushes swell straight into the Rafalet notch.

With a light easterly and three or four calm days the water over the rock and the meadow is clean and the place works. After an easterly blow the shallows fill with suspended sand and visibility drops; anything more than a light E wind is not worth the drive, and heavy rain sends the ravine down murky.
opasnost
The boundary of the Illa de l'Aire marine reserve sits less than a kilometre to the south, roughly 870 metres away: past that line spearfishing is banned (Decret 41/2015 art. 6.1) and Menorca has no exemption. Check the chart before working south, keep the buoy up and stay within 25 m of it.
pristup
Entry is off the iron ladders on the S'Algar seafront, with parking in the village itself, while Cala Rafalet is reached on foot down the pine-shaded ravine path. The limestone is sharp, so wear booties. With an easterly running do not exit at the ladders: the surge slams against the wall.

Setovi: prati nizove valova ≥15 min prije ulaska; Hmax ≈ 2×Hs, zapljuskivanje može ići 50 m dalje od linije pjene. Zatišje >10 min uz period >12 s = veliki set koji «kasni», NE ulazi; uđi odmah nakon što prođe cijeli set i provjeri ponovno u 30. minuti.
Izlaz PRVO: nađi izlaz I rezervni prije ulaska. Na kamenitoj obali ili obali s gromadama porast mrtvog mora od 0,5 m može onemogućiti izlazak — ostati zaglavljen/bez izlaza glavni je ubojica.
Struja na rtu: na izbočenim rtovima često postoji stalna topografska povratna struja, bez obzira na model — lociraj je, ulazi/izlazi s privjetrine, nikad ne plivaj protiv nje.
Hladnoća: neopren prema prikazanoj SST; prvi drhtaj = skok metabolizma i pad apneje → izađi na prvi ustrajni drhtaj. Ispod 15 °C ograniči izlazak na 45–60 min.
Disciplina u solo ronjenju: bova gore; nekome reci lokaciju i vrijeme izlaska; konzervativna apneja (nikad ne forsiraj u hladnoj/mutnoj/uzburkanoj vodi); vidljivost <3 m — ne ulazi.
Poslijepodnevni vjetar: na mnogim obalama vjetar jača od podneva — planiraj izlazak iz vode do podneva; kad se digne kratki val — izlazi.

Treba li dozvola u Maó?
Yes — in Maó you need a recreational sea-fishing licence (issued by the autonomous community); breath-hold only (no scuba), with a marker buoy and no night diving. See the guide.
✓There is no fixed national catch cap (, art. 5 delegates it to the communities); the standard is 5 kg/person/day, with 1 specimen allowed not to count (Canaries — Decreto 182/2004, art. 38.3; Murcia; Galicia; Basque Country). Protected species have per-piece quotas.
✓Only a harpoon is allowed — hand-held or mechanically propelled, with one or several points (, art. 14.1). Carrying spearfishing gear and underwater breathing equipment aboard AT THE SAME TIME is prohibited (art. 14.2) — an offence in itself, even if you dived on a breath hold.
✓Spain is not one jurisdiction. The licence is issued by a coastal autonomous community, and you must comply with the rules of the administration on whose littoral you are in the water: «debiendo cumplir la normativa establecida por la administración en cuyo litoral se realice la actividad» (, art. 13). Interior waters — inside the straight baselines: bays, coves, rías, the whole coastal strip — are the community's competence; exterior waters are the State's. So the age, the days of the week, the distances and the are found in your community's act, not in the state one.
✓Balearic Islands: the spearfishing licence is issued by the Govern (CAIB). Key rule: spearfishing is BANNED in the marine reserves, EXCEPT in Badia de Palma, Migjorn de Mallorca and Llevant de Mallorca (there, with a licence).
✓Balearics: grouper/anfós — 45 cm in interior waters, 50 cm in marine reserves; mandatory marking (a cut in the lower caudal-fin lobe, spearfishing included) — Decreto 34/2014, art. 12 + Annex 3. The «50 cm in reserves» figure comes from the official DG de Pesca table (Aug 2025).
✓Bans: Toro/Malgrats (Ponent), Freus d'Eivissa-Formentera, northern Menorca, etc.; the state RMIP Llevant de Mallorca–Cala Rajada also bans it (see zones).
✓Balearics: in the marine reserves of the interior waters spearfishing is NOT allowed. Where the decree makes an exception it takes an individual authorisation from the Direcció General, and only on Saturdays, Sundays, holidays and two weekdays a week set by resolution (Decret 41/2015, art. 6). Which reserves are excepted — see the no-take zones on the map and each reserve's own decree.
